PFYC sets sail for 50th Anniverse
PENTLAND Firth Yacht Club held its annual general meeting last week, starting a year in which the club will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its formation on October 9, 1953. Commodore Doug Shanks and other club officers reported the highbghts of the past year. A change in the programme to give two races on Sunday afternoons had proved popular with members. The juniors, sailing in lbpper dinghies, won the Inter-County Challenge trophy &om Orkney for the first time since 1988. The juniors were also well represented in the season's racing, with some of them moving up &om lbppers to Fireballs.
Geof Henstridge was congratulated on a very creditable result in the 2002 Laser Masters World Championships at Hjannis Yacht Club, Cape Cod, USA, finishing 38th out of 76 with a best individual race position of19th. In a change to the normal dinghy training course, this year the club successfully ran its first training course in small keelboats. Membership numbers are buoyant, with the dinghy compound having to be extended to avoid congestion.
